ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP & NEW CALL TO ARTISTS

Ecology Workshop Promises to Reveal
Truth About the Future of Area Woodlands

Environmental curator David Baker will lead a dynamic workshop on the ecology of the bottomland hardwood forest in Southeast Louisiana on June 27 at A Studio in the Woods.
Baker will lead tours and discussions centered on the species composition of the five different classes of bottomland forest, what invasive species threaten the forest and how to eradicate them, how the forest maintains natural equilibrium without hurricanes and invasive species management, and the long-term outlook for a forest surrounded by non-managed land.
The fee for the workshop, which is limited to 15 participants, is $45 for members of Friends of ASITW or $50 for non-members, or $85 for one-year membership and the workshop. The fee includes lunch and a shield fern as a gift. To register, email info@astudiointhewoods.org or call 504-392-5359.

CHANGING LANDSCAPES: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ARTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Changing Landscapes is a 6-week residency based on the premise that Southern Louisiana can be seen as a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the challenges and possibilities inherent in human interaction with the natural world. We ask artists to describe in detail how the region will affect their work, to propose a public component to their residency and to suggest ways in which they will engage with the local community. Recipients will be given $3000 as a stipend and $1000 towards materials.

DATES Artists may apply for their first, second, third & fourth choice of 6-week residency dates from the following:
September 28 – November 6, 2009
November 9 – December 19, 2009
January 4 – February 12, 2010
February 22 – April 2, 2010

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS Postmark by June 19, 2009, notification by July 27, 2009
